A community supported, nature based, Adventure Playground? Let's do it!
In the summer of 2018, Portland Free Play began a test project to see if we could create the first Adventure Playground in Portland, Oregon. The new Adventure Play Garden at SE 139th & Stark served a diverse working class community community that desperately needs more places for children to play. It also became destination for nature and adventure play for families around the region. We believe that these spaces should be available for all kids! Through the course of the summer, kids explored the meadow, played in the mud pit, climbed the tree, and built amazing scrap forts. And that is just the beginning!
Our goal was to see if we can make this community-supported-playground a reality that can be sustainable for the long term. Though our all-volunteer-run organization was not able to keep the Play Garden open for the school year, we gained valuable experience that will inform Adventure Playground Project to come. The Play Garden will sprout again!
